PRAYER GUIDE

ISAIAH 51:15-16 (NKJV)

15But I am the Lord your God,
Who divided the sea whose waves roared—
The Lord of hosts is His name.
16And I have put My words in your mouth; [Emphasis Added]
I have covered you with the shadow of My hand,
That I may plant the heavens,
Lay the foundations of the earth, [Emphasis Added]
And say to Zion, ‘You are My people.’”

JEREMIAH 1:9,10 (ESV)

Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me,
Behold, I have put my words in your mouth.
See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms,
to pluck up and to break down,
to destroy and to overthrow,
to build and to plant.”

GUIDING TEXT FOR THE FASTING SEASON

ISAIAH 32:1-8

1Behold, a king will reign in righteousness,
And princes will rule with justice.
2A man will be as a hiding place from the wind,
And a cover from the tempest,
As rivers of water in a dry place,
As the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.
3The eyes of those who see will not be dim,
And the ears of those who hear will listen.
4Also the heart of the rash will understand knowledge,
And the tongue of the stammerers will be ready to speak plainly.
5The foolish person will no longer be called generous,
Nor the miser said to be bountiful;
6For the foolish person will speak foolishness,
And his heart will work iniquity:
To practice ungodliness,
To utter error against the Lord,
To keep the hungry unsatisfied,
And he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.
7Also the schemes of the schemer are evil;
He devises wicked plans
To destroy the poor with lying words,
Even when the needy speaks justice.
8But a generous man devises generous things,
And by generosity he shall stand.

EDUCATION

Education (human capacity development) is vital for economic and social development. Education is a channel through which the wisdom, knowledge, understanding, skills and confidence necessary for life in the modern world are acquired. Through education life is communicated from one generation to the next generation. This life expressed in values, beliefs, truth and culture is seen in our families, in our morals, in our social behavior, on our roads, marketplaces, places of entertainment, and in the professions: law, industry, medicine, agriculture, commerce, the military etc. The quality of our culture is reflected in the quality of our education system.

Education affects every area of human experience. The way we see our world, the values we hold important, the skills we consider to be necessary, our perceptions of the past, present, and future are all affected by the education we received and our educational philosophies. Education is thus a process that forms individuals and indeed whole generations for life. The education systems of countries are templates that determine what the next generation will look like. Low education standards in any country result in social and economic underdevelopment.

Over the last 30 years Uganda has made considerable progress in increasing literacy and access to education at all levels. The government has prioritized investment in education and other areas that primarily affect the nation’s Human Development Index (HDI). The HDI calculates standards of living based on life expectancy, education, and per-capita GDP. Since the early 1990s, Uganda’s education budget has increased significantly, supported by foreign aid and Poverty Reduction Fund initiatives earmarked specifically for education purposes. Between 2000-2007, the expenditure on education as a percentage of total government expenditure was 18.7%. In the interest of attaining universal primary education, more than 60% of the country’s education budget went to primary education. In 2018 it was 10.92% as Government prioritized other sectors.

Investments in physical infrastructure have also increased. While the education system and overall level of primary school enrollment have improved, primary school completion rates are low. Uganda has had an impressive expansion of enrolment at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels however there is still a long way to go with regard to quality. With a fast-growing youth population, preparing this youth bulge with the skills to compete in the global economy is cause for concern. School drop out rates are high and much improvement is needed in the quality of education being offered.

Over fifty years after independence, the national curriculum being used to raise the next generation has not changed significantly from that used by the colonialists to fulfill their agenda. As a result there is hardly any training on leadership and entrepreneurial skills in the education system. Rote learning and memorization still form the core of the education system at a time when employment and business are looking for critical thinking, creativity and innovation. The products of the education system on the whole are therefore not well prepared to take advantages of the opportunities available in our economy and to overcome the challenges we face as a country. Furthermore, there is a mismatch between the opportunities available in the country and the abilities of the graduates of our education system.

A godly education system has instruction in righteousness as its first line of learning. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and wisdom is the goal of a godly education. There can be no true wisdom that does not begin with the fear of the Lord. At the heart of the Great Commission is the command to teach the nations to observe all that He commanded. This forms the bedrock for any education system aligned to the Kingdom of God. Its philosophy must be based on the teachings of Jesus.

Our Constitution states under the “National Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy”: Objective XVIII. Educational objectives.

  • The State shall promote free and compulsory basic education.
  • The State shall take appropriate measures to afford every citizen equal opportunity to attain the highest educational standard possible.
  • Individuals, religious bodies and other non-governmental organisations shall be free to found and operate educational institutions if they comply with the general educational policy of the country and maintain national standards.

SCRIPTURES FOR PRAYER AND PROCLAMATION

MATTHEW 28:19, 20

EPHESIANS 6:4
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction
of the Lord.

DEUTERONOMY 4:10
How on the day that you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, the LORD said to me, ‘Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children so.’

DEUTERONOMY 6: 6 – 9
And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

DEUTERONOMY 11:18-21
“You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.

WORSHIP JEHOVAH THE TEACHER AND THE GIVER OF WISDOM

THANKSGIVING

  • Thank God for the improvement in education over the last 30 years
  • Thank God for our constitution that provides for the promotions of different approaches to education.
  • Thank God for the leadership of the Ministry of Education and Sports and all they are doing to improve education in the country.

PROCLAMATION FOR THE EDUCATION SECTOR

God is raising parents, teachers and leaders at all levels of authority in the education sector that will lead their learners in righteousness and justice.

They shall shelter their learners from the storms blowing in society and especially in the education sphere. Like the shadow of a great rock in a weary land, they will protect their learners and not take advantage of them. They will refresh their learners like a drink of water refreshes a weary desert traveler. They will speak truth and through their words the ears of their learners will be opened and eyes of their learners will be enlightened for understanding and to see new horizons and possibilities.

Unrighteous and dishonest leaders are being removed from places of authority in the education sphere. These include:

  • The troublemakers, thieves, poor decision-makers, the greedy and selfish
  • Those that have entered the sphere of education with evil plans and schemes o Those who lie and pervert truth and justice
  • Those who practice ungodliness, thus depriving their learners and those who are hungry for knowledge through corruption and other means
  • Those who sexually exploit their learners with wicked schemes like “sex for marks” o Those who destabilize the education system by instigating and constantly promoting strikes in educational institutions
  • Those who receive salaries but do not teach their learners

A season is now emerging where the leadership at all educational levels is truly honorable, noble, selfless and generous.

Parents will take the primary responsibility for the education of their children.

The education system will be built on the foundations of the values espoused by the Word of God. Learners will no longer be subjected to humanistic indoctrination in our educational institutions. Uganda’s children will be taught of the Lord and learn His ways and great will be their peace. The archaic education system left by the colonial powers will finally be overthrown and a new values and outcomes based system that promotes critical thinking, creativity and innovation, excellence will take centre stage. Graduates from the education system will be disciplined, knowledgeable, skilled, future ready and relevant to the times they will graduate in. They will be agents of progressive transformation for their times and thus enable the country reach its greatest potential and destiny.

The knowledge of God shall cover our country as the waters cover the sea!

AMEN and AMEN
