Week 4: The Church as the Vineyard of God – 12th – 18th September 2021

Prayer and Fasting 2021

PRAY THAT THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST WILL COME TO FULL MATURITY AS THE VINEYARD OF GOD AT ALL LEVELS: FROM THE INDIVIDUAL TO THE GLOBAL LEVEL

PRAY INTO THE FOCUS OF EACH DAY AS IT RELATES TO THE THEME OF THE WEEK

The Scriptures, the history of Judaism, and that of the Church show that God seeks fruitfulness from His people. When God’s people are not fruitful, a time of judgment eventually follows where God entrusts His purposes to another group of people. Pray that fruitfulness will abound in the Church of Jesus Christ and that we will avert the repercussions of fruitlessness. Our main focus of prayer this week is fruitfulness in our lives and in the Church of Jesus Christ.

ISAIAH 5:1-7

Let me sing for my beloved my love song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; and he looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes. And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done in it? When I looked for it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes? And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. …

LUKE 13:6-9

And he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’ And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.”

MATTHEW 21:33-43

“Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country. When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit. And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’ And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.” Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’? Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”

MATTHEW 13:18-23

“Hear then the parable of the sower: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.

MATTHEW 21:18

In the morning, as he was returning to the city, he became hungry. And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” And the fig tree withered at once.

JOHN 15:1-8

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.

JOHN 15:16

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

GALATIANS 5:22,23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

PHILIPPIANS 1:9-11

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

COLOSSIANS 1:9,10

And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God…

2 PETER 1:5-8

For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

PRAY FIRST FOR YOURSELF AND THEN FOR THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST (THE LOCAL CHURCH, THE CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY, THE CHURCH IN THE MARKETPLACE, AND THE CHURCH WORLDWIDE) THAT SHE WILL NOT BE UNFRUITFUL BUT RATHER WILL BE FILLED WITH BELIEVERS:

  1. Who are increasingly bearing fruit that is pleasing to God
  2. Who are receptive to the discipline of the Lord and the pruning process so that they will yet will bear more fruit
  3. Who are mature and manifest the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22)
  4. Who are filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God
  5. Who are bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God
  6. Who are making every effort to supplement their faith with:
  1. Virtue
  2. Knowledge
  3. Self-control
  4. Steadfastness
  5. Godliness
  6. Brotherly affection, and
  7. Love

7. Who are abounding in fruitfulness

PRAY THAT THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST WILL COME TO FULL MATURITY AS THE VINEYARD OF GOD AT ALL LEVELS: FROM INDIVIDUAL TO THE GLOBAL LEVEL.

PRAY THAT THE WORLD WILL ENJOY AND BENEFIT FROM THE FRUITFULNESS OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST AND THE FATHER WILL BE PLEASED.
