PERSONAL AND CORPORATE PREPARATION
1 Corinthians 11:31
31For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. 32But when we are judged, we are
chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.
Psalm 19:12-14
Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight,
O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.
1 John 1:5-10
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is
no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do
not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one
another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we
deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to
forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we
make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
As we begin the season of prayer for the Church of Jesus Christ, it is vital that we spend
time examining our lives and heart attitudes. As we do this and repent of our sins in this regard,
the legal ground for the voice of the “accuser of the brethren” (Revelation 12:10) before the
throne of God will be removed. Without doing so, our prayers will be made of little or no effect.
Therefore the first three days of this year’s national fasting and prayer season will be spent on
examining ourselves and confessing our sins.
In Psalm 19:12, the psalmist refers to “hidden faults” and “presumptuous sins.” Hidden faults are
known to us but may not be known to others. Presumptuous sins are translated in other versions
of the Bible as “willful sins” or “deliberate sins”. These are committed well knowing what we are
doing. They are done with forethought, in defiance, intentionally, and with our eyes wide open.
They are a manifestation of a rebellious heart: one knows that it is wrong and does it any way. The
heart that commits presumptuous sins is hardened, proud, and does not care what God thinks.
This attitude towards God’s laws and commandments arises from carelessness with God and His
Word, and carelessness with the needs of others. God views these sins so seriously that in the old
covenant no provision was made for their atonement (Numbers 15:30,31).
SELF EXAMINATION
1 John 2:1-6
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin,
we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins,
and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we have
come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep
his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly
the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in
him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.
Psalm 139:23,24
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
Over the next three days take time to examine yourself against the sins listed in alphabetical order
below. Allow the Holy Spirit to search your heart and confess anything that He brings to light.
1. Adultery: infidelity to a marriage partner
2. Anger, wrath and (same as murder)
3. Backbiting: speaking evil of those who are absent
4. Bitterness against other: unforgiving heart
5. Blasphemy: speaking disrespectfully of God
6. Brawling: fight or quarrel in a rough or noisy way
7. Bribery: giving or taking of them
8. Burying your talents: not making wise use of what God gave you
9. Calling a brother a fool: ridiculing another
10. Cheating God in tithes and offerings
11. Clamor: loud, continued noises
12. Cohabiting: unmarried people living and sleeping together
13. Competition: ambition to excel
14. Contentiousness: quarrelsomeness, causing strife, seeking superiority
15. Corrupt communications: unprofitable or impure language
16. Covenant breaking: lightly breaking a solemn or legal pact, divorce
17. Craftiness: cunningness
18. Defiling the body: abusing of self, having unnatural lusts
19. Denying Christ
20. Desiring the praise of men: doing things to gain praise.
21. Despitefulness: expressing malice or hate
22. Devising evil plans: contriving evil ways to satisfy carnal lusts.

37. Foolishness: foolish talking: silliness
38. Fornication (sexual intercourse between people not married to each other)

40. Greed and Covetousness: intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth,
power, or food
41. Guile: being treacherous, cunning; skillfully deceiving others
42. Harboring evil treasures in the heart
43. Hardheartedness: refusing to be appeased; entertaining very strong feelings of hostility or
disapproval that nobody can change
44. Hatred: extreme dislike or disgust of another person or people
45. Having pleasure in the company of evildoers.
46. Hearing the sayings of Christ, but not following them
47. Heresies: holding religious opinions different from established scripture.
48. Hypocrisy: pretending to be what you are not; claiming to have higher standards or more
noble beliefs than is the case
49. Idle words: babbling, speaking words of no value
50. Idolatry: loving someone or something more than God
51. Inordinate affection: passion, lust.
52. Jealousy: a feeling of unhappiness and anger because someone has something or someone
that you want – wishing that they did not have it
53. Judging others
54. Knowing to do good, but doing it not
55. Lasciviousness: lustful, wanton, exciting lust – behaving in a way that expresses a strong
desire for sexual activity, being morally unrestrained
56. Laziness: sloth
57. Living in pleasure: fond of luxury and sensual pleasure/gratification.
58. Longing or desire for forbidden things.
59. Lying
60. Maliciousness
61. Mockery: unkind, critical remarks or actions against God or fellow man
62. Murmuring: grumbling, secretly complaining
63. Offending others: causing another to fall spiritually by our example; becoming a stumbling
block to a weak brother through our liberty; taking liberty to do things without thinking of

the effect on a weaker brother’s conscience
