Praying for the coming years

John 17 is a record of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples including those of us alive today. Psalm 72 is a record of David’s prayer for his son Solomon but includes aspects yet to come to fulfilment in the reign of David’s Greater Son Jesus Christ.  Genesis 49 is a record of words and prayers that Jacob spoke words over his sons concerning the future. Moses did the same over the 12 tribes of Israel in Deuteronomy 32 and 33. When Daniel understood that a 70-year season was coming to an end and a new season was dawning, he spent time in prayer and fasting beseeching the Lord to have mercy on him and his people and to fulfil the good word spoken by the prophet Jeremiah concerning the desolations of Jerusalem. God enabled Daniel to witness the answers to his prayers however God continued to answer Daniel’s prayer even after he was long dead as seen in the return of Ezra and Nehemiah.

WE CAN PRAY AND SET TRENDS CONCERNING THE FUTURE NOW.

This is especially important as like Daniel we discern the end of one season and the beginning of another. As we begin a new season of our nation’s life it is vital that we take time to pray concerning the coming years that the intents and purposes of God for our land will come to pass in their fullness. Some of these prayers will be answered beyond our time but we can play a part in bringing them forth and therefore share in the rewards that they will bring.

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. 13And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. 14I will be found by you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back from your captivity…”
Jeremiah 29:11-14
